What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are substances such as collagen that fill in fine lines, wrinkles or other dermal depressions to smooth the appearance of the skin. How are dermal fillers administered?

Dermal fillers are injected just below the skin in the problem area the patient wishes to address. There may be several injections per site, such as the eyes, forehead and cheeks. These injections are performed by a nurse, dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon in their office and take just a few minutes per site to do.

Which areas of can be treated with dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are primarily used on the face. They can be used to treat fine lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth, across the forehead and to add fullness to the cheek and lip areas.

What are the side effects of dermal fillers?

While serious complications from dermal fillers are quite rare, the majority of patients who do experience side effects have only localized reactions, such as redness, swelling or brusiing of the injection site.

How long do the effects of dermal fillers last?

The results of dermal fillers last between four months and one year, depending on the type of filler used and the location where it was injected. Dermal fillers break down and dissolve own their own over time at which point the patient can decide whether to have them re-administered.

When will the effects from dermal fillers be noticeable?

The effects of dermal fillers are instant. However, there may be some localized swelling around the injection site that may influence the final appearance of the skin for a short time after the procedure.

Is there any downtime associated with having dermal filler injections?

There is no recovery time associated with having dermal filler injections. After the office visit, patients are free to return to work and other daily activities.  Some may experience some mild discomfort in the injection sites, which can be treated with over-the-counter medications or other medications prescribed by the cosmetic surgeon.

Is everyone a good candidate for dermal fillers?

While dermal fillers are safe for most patients, there are some medical conditions that may disqualify some patients from being candidates for the procedures. Dermal fillers are not recommended for patients with certain types of allergies, blood disorders or inflammatory skin conditions. Pregnant or breast feeding mothers may also be unable to receive dermal filler injections.

Can dermal fillers be given in conjunction with other procedures, such as chemical peels or laser treatments?

While dermal filler injections cannot be given along with the aforementioned procedures, patients can opt to have dermal filler injections once the skin has completely healed from previous procedures. The healing process usually takes a couple of weeks, at which time dermal filler injections can be scheduled, if the patient desires.
